Artist's Statement

About My Work…and “Desídephemeráta”

I’ve been an artist all my life and have always been interested in the bits and pieces of experience that appear for just a moment and the immense fascination they can hold… the shape of a bird’s wing in flight, the rhythm of the waves moving into shore, the constantly changing liquid structure of clouds, light falling on an object and magically transforming it for a brief second. I’m not sure why certain things strike my fancy, but when they do, I find myself spending a considerable amount of time turning them over in my mind trying to figure out what made them seem significant in the first place. It’s usually from a strong suspicion that in some way or another they fit into the puzzle of “What it all means”.

In all my creative endeavors, the result…the final image…is my concern. The paint, graphite, film or digital media, or any other tool or method is simply a way to get there. The process of working towards that goal is the best part. It’s usually where I learn the most about what I chose to explore and am attempting to express. My creative efforts are currently focused on painting, mainly in the medium of acrylic and water media, but I also find a great deal of creative satisfaction exploring these fleeting images and their meanings and connections through the camera lens. That being said, drawing and the medium of brush and paint are still my preference.

I chose to call my preferred subject matter “Desídephemeráta”, from the title of the poem “Desiderata”, something to be desired, and “ephemera” or “ephemerata”, momentary fleeting occurrences in life. For me, “Desídephemeráta” are those insignificant, everyday things that I witness which I suspect hold some clue or mysteriously significant meaning in the “What it all means” of life. It’s what I enjoy exploring in my creative work, sorting out the meaning and trying to see how everything fits and works together. The process of visualizing and communicating my observations and suspicions is an endlessly fascinating puzzle in which an easy answer will always fail to satisfy.
